Professional ultimate frisbee: the leagues, the pay and how to watch

Yes, ultimate has professional leagues: the Ultimate Frisbee Association for men, and the Premier Ultimate League and Western Ultimate League for women and non-binary players. But it is a part-time job. Most players earn somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand dollars a season, and nearly all of them have day jobs.

How much do professional ultimate frisbee players make? Very little by pro-sport standards. The Premier Ultimate League pays its players $40 per league game. Pay in the men’s league is set team by team and mostly kept private, but the best-known published contract, a 2022 deal with the Atlanta Hustle, was worth $3,400 for the whole season including travel expenses — and it made news because it was so high.

The three professional leagues

League Who plays Size Latest champion
Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA)
Founded 2012 as the AUDL
Men’s (open) division 22 teams across the US and Canada in 2026, in four divisions Oakland Spiders, who beat the Minnesota Wind Chill 21–16 in August 2026
Premier Ultimate League (PUL)
Founded 2019
Women and gender-expansive players 10 teams, split into North and South divisions DC Shadow, who beat the Philadelphia Surge 20–10 in June 2026
Western Ultimate League (WUL)
Founded 2020
Women and non-binary players 7 teams in western North America in 2025 San Diego Super Bloom, 12–10 winners over the Bay Area Falcons in 2025

The UFA is the biggest and oldest of the three. It started in 2012 as the American Ultimate Disc League and renamed itself the Ultimate Frisbee Association in January 2024. Each team plays 12 regular-season games between April and July; the top three in each division go to the playoffs, and the final four meet at Championship Weekend in late August. The 2026 edition was in Madison, Wisconsin.

What professional ultimate players are actually paid

Search for this and you will find pages confidently claiming that pro ultimate players earn $50,000 to $120,000 a year. There is no evidence for that. Every figure that can actually be traced back to a league or a player points the other way:

  • The PUL pays $40 per league game. Over a regular season that is a few hundred dollars.
  • UFA pay is set by each team and mostly private. When Khalif El-Salaam signed with the Atlanta Hustle in 2022, he published his contract: $3,400 for the season, covering salary plus travel to home games and practices. It was newsworthy precisely because it was unusually generous and unusually public.
  • Most players earn far less. One widely cited estimate puts the typical player at under $100 a game, or a few hundred dollars a season.
  • Teams say so themselves. The Hustle’s own statement at the time: “We dream of the day that all Hustle players can earn a living wage playing on our team.”

What the leagues do provide is a season of top-level games with travel covered, which club players usually pay for out of their own pockets. The players who make a living from the sport tend to do it around the pro game rather than from it: coaching, running camps and clinics, sponsorships and making content.

The money is tight for the teams too. Detroit and Los Angeles became the 16th and 17th UFA teams to fold since 2012 when they stopped operating after the 2025 season.

How the pro game differs from pickup

It is the same sport, but the UFA changes enough to make it feel different to watch:

UFA (professional) Pickup and most club ultimate
Officials Referees count the stall and call fouls No referees: players make their own calls under Spirit of the Game
Stall count Seven seconds, counted by the referee Ten, counted aloud by the marker
Game length Four 12-minute quarters on a clock Played to a target score, usually 13 or 15 points
Field 53⅓ yards wide, 80 yards long plus 20-yard end zones — the width of an American football field 40 yards wide, 70 yards long plus 20-yard end zones
Fouls Most carry a 10-yard penalty No yardage penalties: play stops and restarts, and a fouled receiver is usually given the catch

If you are learning the game, learn the standard version first: the rules of ultimate and the field dimensions are what you will play under.

How to watch professional ultimate

  • WatchUFA.tv streams every UFA game on a subscription.
  • One free game a week goes out on the league’s YouTube channel. In 2026 it ran as Friday Night Frisbee.
  • The women’s leagues post their schedules and streams on their own websites.
  • In person: every UFA team sells tickets to its home games, and Championship Weekend at the end of August is the showpiece.

What happened to the Detroit Mechanix?

Michigan no longer has a professional ultimate team. The Detroit Mechanix, one of the league’s original teams, played from the first season in 2012 until 2025. On 12 November 2025 the league announced that the Mechanix and the Los Angeles Aviators were suspending operations after both missed its deadline to pay their annual league assessment, which covers costs such as referees.

The Mechanix are remembered above all for a run of 81 straight defeats between April 2017 and June 2024, believed to be the longest losing streak in professional sports history. They moved around the state over the years, from the Pontiac Silverdome in 2012 to Madison Heights and, from 2021, Grand Rapids.

The closest UFA teams to Michigan now are in the Central and East divisions: the Chicago Union, the Indianapolis AlleyCats, the Pittsburgh Thunderbirds and the Toronto Rush, each a few hours’ drive from Livingston County.

How players get there

Almost every pro player came up through college and club ultimate. College ultimate in the US is a club sport run by USA Ultimate rather than the NCAA, and the strongest club teams compete in USA Ultimate’s national series each autumn. Pro teams hold tryouts before each season and draw most of their rosters from that pool; in 2026, 16 of the 20 active players on the championship-winning Oakland roster had just won the world club title with San Francisco Revolver.

The route starts somewhere much less glamorous: a park, a disc and a few people willing to throw it. If you have never played, how to play ultimate is the place to start.

Start where the pros started

Ultimate Together is a new, beginner-friendly pickup group forming in the Howell–Brighton area of Livingston County, Michigan, with first adult co-ed games planned for May 2027. No tryouts, no contracts, no experience needed. Join the list and come and play.
