Ultimate frisbee equipment: what to bring to your first pickup game
Ultimate is one of the cheapest team sports there is. A disc, something to run in, and two shirts covers it. Here is the honest list of what you need, what helps, and what you can ignore.
What you actually need
- A light shirt and a dark shirt. This is how pickup teams get split, every single time, and it is the item beginners always forget. Bring both and you can play on either side.
- Shoes you can sprint and stop in. Running shoes are fine on dry grass. Cleats once you are playing regularly, or the first time you play on wet grass.
- Water. More than you think. Ultimate is continuous running in short bursts, and a spring session will take more out of you than a jog of the same length.
- Shorts without zips or pockets. Zips scratch people when you go to the ground.
- Nothing on your hands or wrists. Rings and watches come off. It is a rule at organised events and sensible everywhere.
That is the entire required list. You do not need to own a disc to turn up — groups always have spares — and no beginner has ever been turned away for wearing the wrong thing.
What genuinely helps
| Item | Why | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|
| Your own 175g disc | Lets you practise between sessions, which is the only way throwing improves. Which one to buy. | The best money you can spend on this sport. |
| Moulded cleats | Grip on wet grass, sharper cutting, fewer slips. | Yes, once you are turning up most weeks. |
| Socks above the ankle | Cleat collars rub. This is the cheapest blister prevention there is. | Yes. |
| A dry layer for afterwards | You will finish soaked and then stand around talking. Michigan spring evenings get cold fast. | Yes. |
| Sunscreen | Two hours on an open field with no shade, most of it facing the same direction. | Yes, and people forget it in April. |
Ultimate frisbee gloves: do you need them?
Gloves are the one piece of optional kit people ask about most. The honest answer: they are useful in specific conditions and unnecessary in most.
- What they do
- Tacky palms improve grip on a wet or cold disc, both for catching and for throwing. They are made for disc sports specifically — not batting or cycling gloves.
- When they help
- Rain, heavy dew, and cold weather where your hands stop working. Also for players whose hands sweat enough to make the rim slippery in summer.
- When they do not
- A dry, mild evening. On a good day they change very little, and a few players find they dull the feel of the release.
- The verdict for a beginner
- Skip them at first. Learn to grip the rim properly with bare hands, then reconsider if you are still playing in November.
What you can ignore
- A jersey. Teams that play in tournaments have them. Pickup does not.
- Compression gear, arm sleeves, tape. None of it makes you better at ultimate. Wear it if you like it.
- A second disc. One is enough. Discs get lost at tournaments, not at pickup.
- Anything sold as an “ultimate training aid”. Throwing at a fence for ten minutes a day does more.
If you are organising, not just playing
Running a pickup session needs slightly more: eight to ten cones to mark a field, two or three discs, and someone willing to explain the rules to whoever is new that week. That is the whole operation.
Bring two shirts and turn up
Ultimate Together is a new beginner-friendly pickup group forming in the Howell–Brighton area of Livingston County, Michigan, with first adult co-ed games planned for May 2027. Join as an individual, borrow a disc, and learn the rest as you go. Joining the list is free.
Equipment questions
What equipment do you need for ultimate frisbee?
A 175-gram disc, athletic clothing, shoes you can sprint in, and a light shirt plus a dark shirt so teams can be split. Cones if you are marking out a field. That is genuinely the whole list — ultimate is among the cheapest team sports to start.
Do I need gloves to play ultimate frisbee?
No. Disc-sport gloves help in rain, dew and cold weather by improving grip on a wet disc, but they make little difference on a dry day. Most players start without them and add a pair only if they play through the cold months.
What should I wear to my first ultimate game?
Athletic shorts without zips, a light shirt and a dark shirt, socks above the ankle, and running shoes or moulded cleats. Bring water and something dry to put on afterwards.
How much does it cost to start playing ultimate?
Close to nothing if you already own running shoes and athletic clothes. A regulation disc costs about as much as lunch, and a pair of entry-level moulded cleats is the only other purchase that matters.
