Where to play ultimate frisbee in Michigan

Every league, club and public pickup game in Michigan that we could verify was still running. Each link below was opened and checked on 17 September 2026. None of these groups are us, and none of them are affiliated with us.

Why this page exists. Ultimate Together is a beginner-friendly pickup group forming in the Howell–Brighton area of Livingston County. First games are planned for May 2027 and we have not played one yet. When we went looking for somewhere to play in the meantime, no single Michigan list existed — so we made the one we wish we had found.

The short answer

Seven parts of Michigan have organised ultimate. Livingston County has none.

Ann Arbor, metro Detroit, Dearborn, Lansing, Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo all have a league or a standing pickup game, and Traverse City has an organisation covering the north. Between them they reach most of the state.

What none of them cover is the middle of Livingston County. The Detroit league maintains the public pickup list for the whole metro area, and there is not one game on it in Howell, Brighton, Hartland, Fowlerville, Pinckney or Fenton. The nearest listed game to any of those towns is in Ann Arbor — a real drive on a weeknight, which is the whole reason we are starting something closer.

City by city

Leagues and clubs, checked 17 September 2026

What each group actually runs, described in their own terms. Seasons and nights change, so treat this as a starting point and read their own page before you turn up.

Ann Arbor Ultimate

Ann Arbor

Co-rec recreational leagues on Sunday and Wednesday nights, plus a Goalti league. The Fall 2026 leagues were in progress when we checked and Goalti was still accepting registrations. They also keep their own pickup page and a directory of local club teams. The closest organised ultimate to Livingston County.

Detroit Ultimate Frisbee League

Metro Detroit

The hub for southeast Michigan. Maintains the public weekly pickup list for the whole metro area and a directory of other local organisations. Their pickup page says plainly that games are open to anyone who would like to play, and that pickup is a good way to learn.

Dearborn Ultimate

Dearborn

Free pickup, running since about 1990. In their own words: beginners are welcome, no commitment is needed, and it is free. Usually Tuesdays at 6pm at Stout Middle School, though they say the night often moves with the weather, so check their updates page first.

Capital Area Disc Association

Lansing and East Lansing

A USA Ultimate affiliate serving the Lansing area. Ran an East Lansing summer league through 2026, with final standings posted. Their stated goal is to provide a variety of playing opportunities to the local community rather than to run one competitive ladder.

Grand Rapids Ultimate

Grand Rapids

Registration for the 2026 Fall League was open when we checked, following a summer league. They also publish a page of other West Michigan leagues and pickup games, which is the best onward link if Grand Rapids itself is too far.

Kalamazoo Ultimate Disc League

Kalamazoo

Running since 2006, and the most complete calendar we found anywhere in the state: summer, fall and winter leagues, a youth programme and a pickup page. If you want to play year round in Michigan, this is the group that makes it possible.

Traverse City Ultimate

Traverse City

Northern Michigan, with a 231 Youth Ultimate programme alongside the adult league, and a list of local sponsors that suggests a group well rooted in the town. No events were listed on their calendar when we checked, so message them before making the drive north.

Zig Zag Ultimate

West Michigan

Youth ultimate for grades 3 to 8, high school teams, and adult leagues that run all year. New players are explicitly welcome and teams are built by school and community. The clearest route into the sport in Michigan if you are under eighteen or signing up a child.

Every link opens on that group’s own site. We are not affiliated with any of them, we are not endorsed by them, and we get nothing if you join one. If you run a Michigan group that belongs here, or one of these has gone out of date, tell us and we will fix it.

Metro Detroit

The weekly pickup games, as published

This is Detroit Ultimate Frisbee League’s own list, not ours. They last updated it in May 2025, they note that weekly games typically run May through September or October, and they warn that groups change schedules for attendance and weather. Read it as a place to start, not a promise.

Common questions

Playing ultimate in Michigan

Is there ultimate frisbee in Livingston County?

Not yet. No league or public pickup game lists a field in Howell, Brighton, Hartland, Fowlerville, Pinckney or Fenton, and the Detroit league’s metro pickup list has no Livingston County entry. Ultimate Together is being formed to change that, with first games planned for May 2027. The field and the night are still being decided.

Do I need experience to turn up at a pickup game?

No. Pickup ultimate is the normal way people learn. Dearborn Ultimate says beginners are welcome and no commitment is needed; Detroit Ultimate says pickup is open to anyone and is a good way to learn the game. If you have never thrown a disc, read how to throw a frisbee first and you will be fine.

What do I need to bring?

Every group in Michigan asks for the same four things: a light shirt, a dark shirt, water, and shoes you can run in. Cleats help but are not required. There is more detail in what to bring to pickup.

When is the ultimate season in Michigan?

Outdoor pickup generally runs May through September or October. Leagues split into spring, summer and fall seasons, and Kalamazoo also runs a winter league. Practically, if you are looking in January, your options are indoor Kalamazoo or waiting for spring.

Does it cost anything?

Pickup is free everywhere we looked. Organised leagues charge a season fee, which varies by city and usually covers fields, discs and insurance. Check the individual group’s registration page for current pricing — we do not list fees here because they change every season.

Can children play ultimate in Michigan?

Yes. Zig Zag Ultimate runs teams for grades 3 to 8 and for high school, Kalamazoo Ultimate Disc League has a youth programme, and Traverse City Ultimate runs 231 Youth Ultimate. Ultimate Together is an adult group, so we are not the right answer for a child.

How current is this list?

Every site linked here was opened and read on 17 September 2026, and we describe only what each group was publishing on that day. Groups fold, move fields and change nights without updating their sites, so check the source before travelling. If something here is wrong, let us know.

If you are in Livingston County

Get on the Howell and Brighton list

We have not played a game yet. The list is free, it is the only way to hear when a field and a night are confirmed, and everyone on it gets a say in which evenings actually work. If you are anywhere else in Michigan, one of the groups above is a better answer today — go and play with them.
