Ultimate frisbee jerseys
Ultimate is one of the few team sports where the standard kit for most players is two shirts you already own. Here is how pickup makes teams without uniforms, what a real ultimate jersey actually is, and what changes if your group ever orders one.
The short answer. Bring one light shirt and one dark shirt. That is the entire uniform requirement for pickup ultimate anywhere in the world, and it is what we will ask for in Howell and Brighton. Custom jerseys are a club thing, and they come much later — if ever.
How pickup makes teams without uniforms
Pickup has no rosters. Whoever turns up gets split into two sides on the spot, and those sides change from week to week and sometimes from point to point. A permanent uniform would be useless. What the game needs instead is a way to tell two ad-hoc groups apart in one second from forty yards away.
- Everyone brings both. One light-coloured shirt, one dark-coloured shirt, in the same bag.
- Teams are picked, then the call is made. One side goes light, the other goes dark.
- Grey and red are the awkward ones. Mid-tone shirts read as either colour depending on the light. White and black are the safest pair.
- Nothing else matters. Nobody cares what is printed on it, and nobody will be checking.
If you only bring one shirt you will still play. Somebody always has a spare, and it is a very forgiving problem.

What a real ultimate jersey is
Ultimate settled on dye sublimation earlier and more completely than most sports, and the reason is practical rather than cosmetic.
- The ink goes into the fabric, not onto it. Heat turns the dye to gas and bonds it with the polyester fibre, so there is no layer sitting on the surface.
- It does not crack or peel. Screen prints and vinyl transfers fail exactly where a jersey flexes and where players land on it. Sublimation does not.
- It stays breathable. No solid block of ink sealing the weave shut across your back.
- The design can cover everything. Seam to seam, sleeves included, at no extra cost per colour. This is why ultimate kit looks the way it does.
- It only works on polyester. Sublimation will not bond to cotton, which is why every custom ultimate jersey is synthetic.
Who teams order from
A handful of makers specialise in ultimate and know the cut, the fit range and the turnaround the sport expects. We have no relationship with any of them and earn nothing from this list.

Every one of these sets a minimum order, which is why kit is a team decision and never an individual one.
If your group ever orders kit
Worth knowing before anyone volunteers to organise it, because the process catches people out.
- Start months ahead. Art approval, a sizing round and production each take real time, and the queue is longest before tournament season.
- Get a sizing kit, or borrow samples. Cuts vary a lot between makers, and a batch ordered from a size chart alone usually produces a few unhappy people.
- Offer more than one cut. Most makers do a fitted and a relaxed version of the same design.
- Order light and dark together. A team with only one colourway ends up borrowing shirts anyway.
- Order spares. People join mid-season, and a re-run of four jerseys costs far more per shirt than four extras in the original batch.
What to wear to a first session

- You will end up on the ground at some point, and so will other people.

Ultimate Together is a new group forming in the Howell–Brighton area of Livingston County, Michigan. Beginner-friendly adult pickup is planned for Spring 2027 — these are plans, not promises, and the field and night are still being confirmed. The waitlist is free and tells you first.

Do I need a jersey to play ultimate frisbee?
No. Pickup ultimate runs on one light shirt and one dark shirt, both of which you already own. Jerseys belong to organised club and league teams, not to a Tuesday evening game in a park.
What is the light shirt and dark shirt rule?
Pickup has no fixed teams, so sides are made on the spot. Everyone brings one light-coloured shirt and one dark-coloured shirt, the group splits, and one side wears light while the other wears dark. It costs nothing and it works instantly with any number of players.
What are ultimate frisbee jerseys made of?
Almost always lightweight polyester, printed by dye sublimation. The ink is bonded into the fibre rather than sitting on top of it, so the design does not crack, peel or fade the way a screen print or vinyl transfer does, and the fabric stays breathable.
What is a reversible ultimate jersey?
A single jersey that is light on one side and dark on the other, so one garment covers both sides of a scrimmage. Clubs use them for practice, and they are the closest thing to a purpose-built pickup jersey.
Which companies make ultimate frisbee jerseys?
The ultimate-specific makers most teams use are VC Ultimate, Five Ultimate, Savage, Breakmark and Spin Ultimate. All of them do custom sublimated kit with team art; general sportswear printers will also take the job, though they are less familiar with the cut.
Do ultimate jerseys need numbers?
In sanctioned club and league competition, yes: teams are normally required to wear distinguishable uniforms with individual numbers so officials and statisticians can identify players. Pickup requires nothing at all.
How do you wash a sublimated jersey?
Cold water, inside out, no fabric softener, and hang it to dry. The print itself is very durable, but high dryer heat is hard on the polyester and on any stitched seams. Treated this way a jersey outlasts several seasons.
